Kra should stop this nonsense of saying they are below target revenue wise. first they could fix the whole clearance system at Busia et al. then they could get rid of all this corrupt officers who will not do any work unless bribed or if they do, you will wait for hours. they have favorites and if you are not only ching ching will work. its an open secret that to clear a container will cost 5000/ and above. assuming the investigation u nit actually works they could check.

Am a Ugandan citizen and i love Kenya. But the corruption at this customs office for even tiny things is depressing. How do this guys sleep at night?? HE DEMANDED a payment of 20k for a container of goods because he didnt have the time and was busy waiting to see whether his Candidate of choice won. He said he had to make money now or never. Then he refused to accept my documents and sent me away. I only got served after i spoke to another officer who i assume they shared the loot with. While i admit that i could have been more patient and probably saved that cash, its the norm at this yard for us to pay bribes!1

As KRA continues to bury their head in the sand, we keep being forced to pay bribes .. which then adds to the cost of business. do KRA have an investigative arm?? and if so what do they do? corrupt to the TTTTTT! WITH THE delays caused by electioneering, the cost of having your container inspected and maybe cleared has gone up... i hate to write this, i would possibly be flogged in public by my fellow transporters, but hopefully the incoming govt will streamline this crap!if its genuine in creating wealth, reducing the cost of doing business and such a like..

I send laptops and aother electronics from the UK via British Airways cargo.
I was forced to pay this bribe of Ksh 60000 to clear my cargo through Customs and also to some KRA officials at the Airport Customs..
This area must surely rank among the most corrupt in the country.. Every one demands a bribe, even the security guards at the gates..All the officials inside are paid bribes and share among each other..
Otherwise they threaten that they will declare your cargo to be "not fit for purpose " and does not fulfill import conditions and the goods will be auctioned.
The officials must take home approximately 50-100K Kshs. per day from desperate people looking to clear their cargo.
No receipts for any of these is issued.

First you have to wait for hours on end to be checked and counter checked, and to reduce that wait you pay 2/3k then you have a facillitation fee for inspection.. Is it a wonder we have to increase our costs?? This border point and Malaba should be under EACC check. I say without fear of contradiction that we are at the mercies of the lords of impunity and corruption! Many of my fellow Transport truck owners wont say a word, but ENOUGH IS *******

It costs an average of 5k per container to get clearance at this border point. I have average of 10 containers a week, so thats 50k, and am not the only one. If you don't pay a certain high ranking officer here, your container will not be cleared or will be the last to be cleared. The delays to this cause astronomical damage to our businesses, and while many will not complain because they will damage the ''relationships'' they have with this officers, time has come for us to say *******

I imported a vehicle from Japan. However, i did not have the requiste forms from the inspection body. As the vehicle was going through the system and before its release an officer noted that. I needed to then get a Kenya Bureau of Standard certificate. The choices were clear, i either pay for one, delay it and keep paying demurrage ( which had already happened) or have one signed and stamped for a small fee. The negotiation was long and tedious but agreeable. I paid what i had to and moved on.

The ease of doing business at our border controls will only be fixed when we integrate bothe immigration and customs and we dont have to go from one office to the other. this process creates room for corruption which is the case. to have your containers cleared quickl, you have to part with 5k, if you calculate how many containers and trucks are passing through the border point, the customs officers are living large. now as a trucking company owner, i have to add 10/15k for my ''cost of doing business on the road'' from the weighbridge, to various police ''stops'' etc. that cost is finally borne by the customer.

I paid an equivalent of 5000 to custom officers, police and some obsucure govt organization to facillitate my passage to uganda. at every point in the long documentation process, it was either i didnt have a necessary signature from mombasa which i could ''get'' by paying a small fee or some document was missings! last week in Malaba, my other colleague went through the same process. but we have no choice because we have to deliver our goods to teh clients and we have deadlines.its a small price to pay. buy it adds up.

If you think owning is a truck is fun, you try the Busia border point. My trucks have been spending an avearage of 2 weeks at the border point. delays are created because of the many documents that need to be filled but also the bribes we have to pay to police, custom officer and immigration officers, it doesnt matter whether your papers are in order. Many of this officers must be millionaires considering how we oay everyday. This CRAP has to stop.. we are really really tired. Atleast i am!

My wife and I were Peace Corps volunteers in Kenya in the 1970s. We enjoyed our experience very much and came to know many hard-working craftspeople. On our return to the US, we started a small business supplying Kenyan arts and crafts to museum shops. We met with some success and, as a result, returned to Kenya seven times to purchase more srtifacts, each time spending between US $ 10,000 and US $ 30,000 on artifacts, plus several thousand dollars more on expenses. Our goods were shipped out by container. Each time, at the bottom of our shipping bill, there was an amount which we were told had to be paid in cash, in spite of the fact that we paid the rest of the bill in a US $ check. When we finally asked why this was, we were told that it was the bribe to be paid to the customs inspector, who would confiscate our container if we refused to pay the bribe. We were also told that, when we paid the bribe, the inspector would not even bother to inspect our container, he/ she only wanted the "chai". We, in fact, wanted our containers inspected, as well as everyone else's, to prevent the smuggling of wildlife products such as ivory and skins. We are avid conservationists and are upset by the rampant poaching that occurs in Africa. We have seen elephants with poison arrows in their sides and feet missing from snares. As a result of all this we have chosen not to return to Kenya, thus depriving your country and our suppliers there of the substantial amounts we spent on each trip. All this is in addition to the bribe we were forced to pay to the minister who oversaw the export of gemstones and decided that the soapstone carvings we were buying and exporting were "gems" and insisted on a bribe or he would confiscate our container.

I didnt know that the Customs duties had been hiked from sh900,000 to sh1,100,000 per cntr meaning I needed to part with sh400,000 extra for the two containers. However, my clearing agent negotiated with the Customs Officer who asked for the "usual" bribe rate and thats when I came to learn that "usual" meant a third of the taxes evaded. I thus parted with sh133,000 and got my containers thus saving a whooping sh267,000!!
